Provenza Oil Finish Maintenance

General Residential Floor Care & Maintenance

Provenza hardwood floors are durable and easy to maintain. The UV acrylic polyurethane finish protects the wood and keeps your hardwood flooring look beautiful.

Oil Finish Products

Provenza Flooring warrants its Oil Finished floors for a period of 25 years and limited to the original purchaser. Oil Finished floors require periodical maintenance. See regular maintenance below.

Regular Maintenance

  • Dust mop on a frequent basis and use only specifically formulated floor care products. Avoid using any harsh chemical on your floor, included but not limited to ammonia based solution, bleach, STP or Acetone.
  • Specifically produced maintenance products for Oil Finished floors are available through distributors to maintain, protect and refinish these floors.
  • Utilize floor protectors, wide bearing and non staining glides or casters on all moveable furniture, tables or other objects that sit directly on hardwood flooring.
  • Use walk-off or high quality mats to protect the floor from abrasive material. Avoid using latex or rubber backed rugs.
  • When, due to excessive wear or use, the floor requires refinishing, it is suggested to use a qualified, licensed professional refinisher.
  • Do not use masking tape or any other high tack tapes on floors for an extended period of time. Tapes must be removed from the floor on daily basis to avoid damaging the finish.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Place high-quality floor mats and area rugs near outside entrances to prevent dirt, sand and other unwanted substances from being tracked directly onto flooring. Also, if you have wood flooring in your kitchen, a throw rug with a soft or felt backing should be placed in front of the sink area to catch spills and splashes.
  • Affix felt floor protectors on moveable furniture, including chairs, tables, sofas and etc., that sit directly on hardwood flooring.
  • Rearrange rugs and furniture periodically so the floor ages evenly. UV sunlight will change the color of different wood species to varying degrees.
  • Dust mop regularly to prevent sand or abrasive dust build up that can scratch the floors finish.
  • Do not use ammonia or oil-based wax, polish, household dust treatment chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or furniture cleaners.
  • Do not wet mop the hardwood floor because excess moisture can cause damage to your wood floor.
  • Keep pet nails trimmed and filed in order to minimize indentation. All wood floors will indent.
  • Relative humidity should be maintained between 35% and 55% to minimize expansion and contraction of hardwood flooring.
  • Avoid walking on floors with sharp, “stiletto” style high-heel shoes.

Reminders!

  • Contact your retailer for issues and claims.
  • Keep your sales receipts and make sure that the date of purchase is clearly stated on them.
  • Keep a record of the type and code number of your wood flooring. This information can be found on the outside of individual packages.

Old World Collection Floor Care and Maintenance

Oil treated floors offer you a very special finish and ensures a pleasant and natural living environment. In order to insure a lasting pleasure of your oil finished floor, it is necessary to care correctly for the floor right after installation. With the right care, the Old World floor will become increasingly easy to clean and more hard wearing.

After Installation Care

Your floor has been pre-finished with oil from the factory and is ready for domestic areas. For floors installed in commercial areas, we recommend an application of Maintenance Paste right after installation.

Natural Cleaning

The daily cleaning can be done with a broom, vacuum cleaner or Bona Kemi mop and spray. For deeper cleaning, use our Natural Soap which is added to water ½ cup (4 oz) to each gallon of lukewarm water. This has two functions: it cleans the floors AND at the same time forms a protective Natural Soap film on the floor making the surface more resistant. NOTE: Always work with two (2) buckets-one with Natural Soap water and one with clearing water for rinsing of the dirty cloth or mop.

Basic Cleaning

If the floor has been neglected or become dirty, clean it with Wood Cleaner. The Wood Cleaner is added to lukewarm water ½ cup (4 oz). You may leave the solution on the floor to dissolve dirt and then scrub with a brush or pad manually. Again use two (2) buckets in the same manner as the Natural Soap. Immediately after cleaning always wipe the floor with the Natural Soap on a cloth or mop.

Spot Remover

Difficult spots can be removed with Spot Remover. The Spot Remover is sprayed on the spot and left to dissolve. The process may be repeated if necessary. Fluids absorbed deeper into the surface of the floor can be removed by sanding with a very high sanding grit paper. However, this would then require application of the Maintenance Paste.

Maintaining with Maintenance Paste

After a certain period of use, the Old World floor will perhaps look slightly worn and should be maintained with a small quantity of Maintenance Paste.

Before application, clean the floor with Wood Cleaner mixed with lukewarm water and leave dry for some hours. Make sure the floor is completely dry before applying the Maintenance Paste.

Apply a thin coat of the Maintenance Paste onto the floor and immediately polish in by hand or with a polishing machine. Repeat the process if necessary. The floor should look saturated with paste and have a silky, matt surface. Make sure that all paste residues are polished well into the surface using cotton cloths or white polishing cloths.

After approximately 4-5 hours, the floor may be used again but do not expose the floor to water for 48 hours.
